Hi! I figured I’d share my story with Bartholin/vaginal cysts on here because I know it is a common issue.
In August, I got my first cyst while out of town backpacking, which was one of the worst experiences of my life. It was very painful to walk and at the time I had no idea what was wrong with me and no internet service to even do a google search about it. Fast forward 3 days when I finally got back to my hotel and learned that I may have a Bartholin cyst. Google told me to take warm sitz baths 2-3 times a day and to go see a doctor if the pain got any worse. I took a bath immediately and planned to end my trip short to go see my doctor back home since I could barely walk. Lucky for me, the cyst ruptured that night and the pain went away. I thought the whole thing was a fluke and that I would never have to deal with it again.
I was wrong. Last Friday, I woke up with a familiar pain in my pelvis and knew it was happening again, but I couldn’t figure out why. On Monday, I went to my Family Medicine doctor who prescribed me cephalexin (an antibiotic) and said to keep taking 2-3 sitz baths a day. I started the antibiotics right away and paired them with a women’s probiotic — taken at least 2 hours after the antibiotics! — to help maintain the healthy bacteria in my body (this can be especially helpful if you are as prone to yeast infections as I am).
After 36+ hours of taking the antibiotics, the pain had actually gotten worse and the cyst had grown. I was desperate and took to Google once again for answers. I did not want to have the surgery to drain it because I’ve heard very mixed reviews, so I decided to try a home remedy that I saw multiple people swear by: Tumeric powder and coconut oil.
I mixed 1/2 TBSP coconut oil with Tumeric powder until a paste formed and then applied it to the region and let it sit for 2 hours. People also recommended applying baking soda and salt to the area after letting the Tumeric/coconut oil paste sit for 2 hours, but I didn’t even have to do that. After leaving the paste on, the cyst began to drain itself and I feel so much better!
Now I am not a doctor in any way and I have no idea what the adverse effects of this may be. All I know is that it immediately helped and I am no longer in terrible pain. If you experience Bartholin cysts as I do, this could be helpful for you too.
