Here’s How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Cake Differs from Other Royal Cakes

Even though there is traditionally only one type of cake served at every British royal wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle broke royal protocol and served a lemon elderflower cake with buttercream frosting at their wedding. Not only that, but their cake design was much different compared to royal wedding cakes of the past.

In the past, wedding cakes served at royal weddings have had multiple tiers. At Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding to Phillip Mountbatten, the cake was stacked on stakes to separate the layers. Prince William and Kate Middleton changed up the traditional design by having a wedding cake that simply stacked one layer on another without stakes. Having tiers is a royal tradition, especially since there’s a fascinating reason that British royals save the top of their wedding cake. But for Harry and Meghan, also now known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, they avoided royal tradition again with the design of the cake.

On the day of the wedding, Kensington Palace tweeted out a photo of the royal wedding cake. It’s clear in the photo that the royal wedding cake is not set in traditional tiers. Instead, it is displayed on separate gold platters. The only tier involved with this wedding cake is the second smaller tier on the larger front cake.

Even though this cake doesn’t have tiers (or even the traditional flavor), it certainly is a gorgeous creation. Designed by Claire Ptak, the baker of the London-based bakery Violet Cakes, the cake is made of Amalfi lemons and elderflower syrup with decorations of Swiss meringue and 150 flowers, including peonies and roses.

This dessert was only a small part of the official menu for the royal wedding reception, which included a myriad of canapés, bowl dishes, and bubbly drinks.
