How To Sensibly Stock Food For Self-Isolation

While we are all trying to stay isolated at home, there will be times when you may need to venture out of isolation, to restock on essential grocery items. However, in order to make your outing effective and efficient, I have a few tips:

  1. plan your weekly meals and form a grocery list
  2. check your pantry items to avoid food wastage and restock your staple items only
  3. there is no need for panic buying; buy only what you need and be mindful of expiry dates
  4. stick to your grocery list (include some comfort foods you love)

To maximise your outing, it is recommended that you stock up on certain items that will keep for longer yet ensuring that you continue to eat reasonably healthy.

Here are some essentials I recommend:

Whole Grains: Oftentimes grains (such as barley, quinoa) take twice as long to cook than your entire meal. Make a batch or two beforehand, refrigerate them in air-tight containers so they are easily accessible for weeknight dinners

Bananas: I suggest freezing ripe bananas in small containers for blending into delicious smoothies or even a dessert treat: nicecream!

Nuts: I recommend stocking up on raw, unsalted almonds, walnuts and pistachio’s for a heart-healthy snack. A handful a day can keep the doctor away. (A creative way to store nuts are by blending them into ‘nut butters’ – store in airtight containers & enjoy with sliced apples!)

Canned Vegetables: having canned veggies on hand is a great way to ensure that you’re still consuming essential vitamins and minerals – look for cans that are low in sugar and sodium. Some examples are tomatoes, peas and even corn.

Beans & Pulses: all varieties of canned beans are a great source of plant protein and are nutritious, long-lasting options that are tasty, affordable and filling. I cook stews & soups for my family and the best part, leftovers!

During these uncertain times, do bear in mind these essentials and check to see what you already have in your kitchen before making a trip out to the store. You might surprise yourself and find that you can prepare meals with what you already have available, saves you another trip outside! Stay home, stay safe & remember, this too shall pass.
