Whatever your reasons for doing so, giving up drinking isn't always easy. And, as Real Housewives of New York star Luann de Lesseps is finding out, it may take some serious adjustment from your regular routine—especially in social situations where drinking is the norm.
For instance, in the latest episode of RHONY, de Lesseps meets up with co-star Carole Radziwill after attending an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting to talk about how her life has changed after attending a 27-day rehab program.
She tells Radziwill that, in the meetings, she's advised to stay away from "people, places, and things" that may trigger a desire to drink. But, she clarifies, it's not that she can't ever be around people who are drinking; it's just that it makes things a bit more tempting because that's an environment in which she's used to having alcohol.
“It’s not easy to give up drinking because it’s such a mental thing that you’ve learned for so long—it’s like brushing your teeth another way," she tells co-star Dorinda Medley in another scene, noting that eating in restaurants without drinking is especially challenging. "So it’s not the anxiety of not drinking, it’s really the habit of not drinking that you’re fighting.”
Despite the challenges in her way, de Lesseps recently celebrated six months of sobriety on Instagram.
On the Fourth of July, de Lesseps posted a photo of her posing with her ex-husband with a caption reading, "Greatest reunion ever! Wonderful to spend the weekend with the kids and The Count. Also counting my blessings! Celebrating 6 months of sobriety! Happy 4th of July, everyone!"
As she said in the new episode, de Lesseps credits her continued sobriety partially to attending AA meetings. "The meetings just kind of keep me in line," she says.
But de Lesseps doesn't label herself an alcoholic and isn't sure if she'll ever drink again. "I don't want to label myself because I don't feel like I need to," she said. "Today I'm not going to drink. And tomorrow I don't plan on drinking. And I'm good with that."
