Smoothie bowls are a great choice for breakfast for two main reasons. One is that you can pack them full of healthy fruit, then top them off with more healthy fruit. The other is that they look absolutely dynamite on Instagram, if that’s something you’re concerned about.
On both counts, the key to their success is using the right ingredients – and then to really ensure social media success, you need to work on your topping arrangements. Arranging nuts and berries into symmetrical lines is a popular choice, but don’t be afraid to aim for something more original.
This recipe from the coconut connoisseurs at Vita Coco uses plenty of berries to create a picture-perfect pink hue, and then provides an extra portion of your five-a-day by adding more berries on top. Remember that the smoothie itself can only count as one portion no matter how many berries you cram in your blender, so adding some whole fruit to the topping is a smart idea.
The recipe conveniently uses frozen fruit, which is a helpful reminder that having a freezer full of berries and bananas to throw in your blender means you’re never more than 30 seconds away from a healthy and delicious smoothie.
Walnuts are used as a topping in the recipe, providing a handy protein hit along with healthy unsaturated fats and other vitamins and minerals. Feel free to sub in your nut of choice, though, and also consider some seeds as another great way to boost the benefits of your breakfast.
