There are two things I know to be true about myself: First, I like my coffee iced, not hot, all year around. Second, I have never once in my life succeeded at keeping up a habit of making my own cold brew at home instead of buying it. Normally this wouldn’t be a huge issue—hey, I budget for my iced coffee habit—but once the pandemic hit and I started working remotely full-time, I knew I had to figure out a way to get my daily fix from home.
I tried everything. I swapped to buying store-bought concentrate, but that didn’t last for long. I always ran out too quickly, and honestly it was too expensive. I got a pitcher with a built-in strainer, then tried some cheesecloth when that failed, all in the name of making big batches to last me all week. I tried a ton of different types of coarse ground coffee. I even doubled the number of ice trays I keep in my freezer to attempt various pour-over methods. But no matter what I tried, no iced coffee maker really stuck. I’m either too lazy (listen, batch-making is a process), too forgetful (I can’t tell you how many times I haven’t remembered to steep a fresh batch and wound up without my morning cold brew), or too picky (but really, who wants watered-down iced coffee?).
My friend eventually recommended this Maxi-Matic HyperChiller ($ 25, Amazon), and folks, I can say it’s my final iced coffee maker. I brew my hot coffee, pour it directly in, let it sit there for less than a minute, and ta-da, out comes iced coffee. Magic. (Admittedly, I still throw ice in mine, but it’s more of a garnish than a necessity.)
How does it work? Basically by running your liquid through a freezing cold tunnel of stainless steel and ice. The liquid compartment itself is sandwiched between two solid ice-filled chambers. To set it up, you fill the innermost and outermost chambers with water and pop it in the freezer overnight. After that, it’s good to chill any liquid you run through it. Then you can just quickly rinse out the inner chamber and return the HyperChiller to the freezer until next time.
Also, I may be all about iced coffee, but this thing works for everything. I’ve used it to chill water when I’m out of ice (I don’t trust anyone who enjoys room temperature water, sorry) and to avoid watering down cocktails. Oh, and if you’ve ever gotten a bottle of white wine or rosé only to hate that it has to chill in the fridge before you can drink it, hello. This HyperChiller is for you too.
I do have one small complaint—hey, nothing is perfect—which is that I occasionally wish it held slightly more liquid at one time. For drinks like coffee and wine, its 12-ounce capacity is perfectly fine, but when I use it for water, I typically have to do two rounds. That said, if it was much bigger, it would be a pain to store in my freezer, so ultimately, it’s not a deal-breaker. But worth noting!
Honestly, I’ve considered buying a second one just so I can have a dedicated chiller for coffee and one for alcohol to cut down on how often I have to wash it, but I’ve decided not to be that lazy or use up that much room in my freezer.
