What Khloé Kardashian Wished People Told Her About Surrogacy

Each year more and more people across the world grow their families through the help of a surrogate. Despite this increase and the life-changing opportunity it has opened up for thousands, talking about the ups and downs of surrogacy still remains somewhat taboo. This leaves many parents in the dark when it comes to what to expect, even parents like Khloé Kardashian.

In the season three premiere of The Kardashians, the mom of two opened up about the experience of welcoming her son Tatum via surrogate and what she wished someone would have told her. Talking with her sister, Kim Kardashian and Scott Disick, Khloe admitted that the surrogacy process had been “really hard” for her and that she felt “less connected” to her son Tatum than her daughter True. “Kim said hers was easy. This is not easy,” Khloé added.

“I definitely buried my head in the sand during that pregnancy that I didn’t digest what was happening. I think when I went to the hospital, I think that was the first time that it really registered,” the Kardashian said before quickly adding that it “has nothing to do with the baby. It’s just, you’re like, ‘OK, we’re having a baby!’ And this is my son and I’m taking him home with me.”

“I definitely was in a state of shock from my entire experience in general,” she said. “I felt really guilty that this woman just had my baby and then I take the baby and I go to another room and you’re just sort of separated. I felt it’s such a transactional experience… I wish someone was honest about surrogacy and the difference of it. But it doesn’t mean it’s bad or good. It’s just different.”

Kardashian has previously opened up about her difficulties embracing surrogacy after carrying her first child. The decision to pursue surrogacy was made after doctors shared with Kardashian that she would likely be unable to carry a baby herself again. “I’m not gonna get into specifics on-camera,” Kardashian said in a KUWTK episode, “but they said it’s like an 80-something percent chance that I will miscarry. I almost miscarried with True at the beginning. But I didn’t know that was like a lingering thing.”

“This is all really shocking to me,” Kardashian added. “All I’m trying to do is bring more love into my life and into my family, and I just seem to be running into more and more roadblocks. It’s really hard for me to digest.”
