When I take my first slug of water in the morning, I like it ice cold. That pretty much applies for every sip I take throughout the day, whether I’m at my desk banging out a story or sweating it out in a workout class. For the longest time, though, I searched for a bottle that could keep my H2O cold in all situations and look somewhat cool and trendy. Being a writer and editor whose job practically requires a side hustle of Instagramming, most things in my world need to be aesthetically pleasing—at least I prefer it that way—including the water bottle I diligently carry with me all day long.
Enter S’well, the company that basically made water bottles a fashion accessory.
According to the brand’s website, when founder Sarah Kauss launched S’well in 2010, her goal was to “rid the world of plastic water bottles” by giving people reusable ones they’d actually want to drink from. Eight years later, S’well has grown exponentially: In 2016, the company grossed over $ 100 million in sales, Inc reports.
The reason I fell in love with S’well in the first place is because it keeps my water so damn cold.
I was gifted my first S’well—a bright orange hue—about five or so years ago, and it passed my water bottle functionality test with flying colors. Not only did my water stay icy through an indoor cycling class in a warm room full of sweaty people, but it also stayed cold when I held the bottle once for the better part of an hour (though my hand did cramp up like crazy).
Thanks to the S'well bottle's insulated steel body, the company says water in it will stay cold for an impressive 24 hours—and I can assure you that it lives up to this promise. If you're trying to keep a beverage hot, it can do so for 12 hours. The triple-layer construction (steel, copper, steel) is meant to keep your water bottle from sweating. Since I work from a tiny desk in a tiny Queens apartment with no room to spare and little patience to keep cleaning, this is also very important to me.
But it's the gorgeous designs that turned me into a repeat customer.
I don't actually need more than one good water bottle. (Does anyone, really?) But S'well is constantly coming up new colors and patterns—and I am a sucker for a pretty design. So yes, I own three of them: the orange one I mentioned already, a floral print from the brand's collaboration with Liberty Fabrics, and a garden-inspired mint green bottle from an exclusive line with Starbucks. The mint green (mark my words, it’s going to be the next millennial pink) bottle has intricate sketches of flowers, ferns, and leaves. The palette also happens to match my office aesthetic pretty well, so it really looks at home on my desk (as evidenced by my photo up top). Which is something I definitely never thought I’d say about a water bottle.
Last December, S’well made the most extra water bottles ever, which were bedazzled in Swarovski crystals and cost—wait for it—$ 1,500. It took everything in my sparkle-obsessed heart to not spend a small fortune on a water bottle. Other cool design collections have been in line with the rest of their normal-priced inventory—ranging from $ 25 to $ 45, depending on size—including collaborations with fashion designer Lily Pulitzer and photographer Gray Malin.
While I’m the first to admit my recycling game could still use some work, I'd say my S’well water bottles are a very chic place to start. And, you know, hopefully get me some more Instagram likes while I'm at it.
